New Media and News: Interning at TPM
... it's important to understand emerging technology and how it will combine with current systems to form new and exciting possibilities in media.
Last week I started an internship at Talking Points Media, the publishers of websites Talking Points Memo, TPMmuckraker, TPMtv, and TPMcafe. I’m working as a Video Production Intern, but for the time being I’m doing a lot more work on news. In addition to providing video production support, I’m going to help them set up a satellite/fiber interview room so the staff can take part in televised interviews.
It’s a really exciting opportunity, as I’ve been wanting to get more involved with news production. In a few short days I’ve learned so much about the flow of a newsroom. In addition, I’m getting hands on experience in the workings of new media. Getting a handle on the process has taken me some time, but the tech is all familiar. The process is similar to the documentary and educational research I’ve done in other jobs. We’re using a platform called Movable Type, which is similar in form and function to Wordpress (which I use for my site and blog).
I’m looking forward to the next few weeks here at TPM and learning as much as I can about news and new media prodction. My passion is still television, but the distinction between the various media is going to blur over the next decade. For producers, it’s important to understand emerging technology and how it will combine with current systems to form new and exciting possibilities in media.
