Emmy Award

An Honor Beyond My Dreams

emmy-iconIn March of 2007, I was wrapping up work on “Greatest Inventions with Bill Nye” and getting ready to send the finished programs off to The Discovery Channel. Little did I know what would happen one year later. In March of 2008, I received word that our show had been nominated for an Emmy Award. Needless to say, I was shocked and ecstatic at the same time. Some people work their whole lives in television and never even get nominated. To get an honor like that was more than I could have hoped for.

The New York ceremony took place at the end of June in the new Lincoln Center Jazz. It felt surreal as we sat through a few dozen categories before finally getting to ours, “Outstanding Children’s Series”. We were one of the smaller groups present, but I think the whole theater heard us screaming when they read the name of our show from the envelope. It was one of the most incredible moments of my life. I should mention that we tied with another excellent program, “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild”. Jack Hanna is one of the most prominent names in high-quality children’s television, and to tie with him was an honor as well.

I would be remiss if I didn’t say “thank you” to all the people who worked on “Greatest Inventions”. To all the segment producers, writers, editors, associate producers, and production assistants at Tapestry International, thank you for all your hard work. To the staff at The Discovery Channel who brought us this project and gave us the latitude to take it in our own particular direction, thank you. Everyone who had something to do with this project has a share in this award. Production is very much a team effort, and every job matters from the college interns to the executive producers.

I also have to thank my supportive and always loving family. I know that they had their doubts when I told them what I wanted to study in college, but they stood by me and encouraged me to give it my best. There have been a few bumps along the road, but their love and support helped me get this far and have this amazing experience. I love you guys, so thank you for being there for me.

Because this was such an incredible event, and may very well be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I made sure to record as much of the night as I could. I posted the video on YouTube so that you can share in the joy and excitement we experienced. I hope you enjoy it.
